The shad run is now in full swing in the tidal Potomac River and other coastal tributaries in Maryland and Virginia. The spring spawning run begins in mid-March when water temperatures reach the mid-50 degree range and will continue into May. Shad are anadromous fish, meaning the adult shad live in coastal ocean waters for several years until they reach maturity. They return to freshwater tributaries in early spring to spawn when water temperatures warm to above 60 degrees.
