Yeah. It's something you learn through understanding what your job is and what it should sound like as a finished product. Some of em, I think the answer is yes. Then I'll jump in and push him a little bit into other areas. And I think that proving myself was something that went on for quite some time with the band members. So its always a fine, artful dance. I wanted to play. So it can make any singer a little crazy. I sing with myself all the time I'm playing. He is a drummer, best known for his work with Frank Zappa, David Bowie, and Journey. We were all lovin it. I also played with Jimi Hendrix. Please prove that you're human. Jimi would come down and sit in with Retaliation and we would have a ball. I was the new kid in town. So youre not enjoined from discussing him in public? I stll perspire a lot, but it's just from my body working. But Im just not in it for the money. You had that urge, but you didnt act on it. In my mind, he cracked the stone when he went out and did our stuff without us. Dunbar vented his frustration with his old band's increasingly commercial direction in a February 1979 interview with BAM, conducted after he joined Jefferson Starship. Well, how do you do that and use it at the same time? This was in the 80s? So I have a lawsuit against them. Did they give you any advice? But before that it was ridiculous. Using your fingers makes em better. *** But he puts the drum track together one drum at a time, so it can sometimes be very abstract. I started out with tin cans actually, to see if I could develop anything, but l got bored trying to get a sound out of it so finally got a drum and started practicing on that. I was kind of surprised. They wanted to get on the road, and I said Well, lets just get the video done. So we got the When You Love A Woman video doneI was packing my whole left side in ice between takes. Much like a lot of people are. Aynsley Dunbar was born on the 10th of January, 1946. That everybodys a dreamer on some level? I just kept my eyes on him all evening. How do you draw the line between playing freely enough for yourself and at the same time, being consistent enough that the rest of the band knows what you're doing? I was also looking after Jeff as far as that was concerned. You want to leave it so you're backing them, rather than leading them. The music was a mix of instrumental orientated rock-fusion and progressive tunes with vocals. It has a lot of open rolls, 16th notes, 5-stroke rolls and triplets in nice little combinations. And that I was still able just to play and have at least half of myself there. By that time I was actually playing rudiments better than my teacher, so all he could do was help me read music and understand it. I was a Journey member. _[A few days after I talked to Perry, I did a follow-up interview with Neal Schon, Journeys co-founder and lead guitarist, in which we discussed some of the same issues Perry brought up. Whether its making a movie or making music. And we still waited, even though we had things goin on. Now I wanna go home for a while., **As a singer, were you dealing with a different set of demands? Because before that last tourmy mother had died, during the making of Raised on Radio. Id be comin off it, and probably didnt know that I was probably just jonesing for a drink. Im so glad you came. Because since Mayhold on, Ive got the fax on my wall, in my studio. He hugged me, I hugged him, and he said a few things in my earthat are mine, Im not gonna mention em. Dont go out and play these songs with someone else and crack the stone. And sell some records. This past weekend I began my re-read of all Carl Sagan's books + his video series and interviews. I was back in my house February 1stIll never forget that date. With their 1978 breakthrough album, Infinity, some rock writers even today attempt to reduce the remarkable transformation by the San Francisco band Journey as "talented, veteran, but commercially struggling group hires world-class singer, which anybody would recognize; shortens song arrangements; and instantly becomes the biggest band in America". You get in a baseball team and some people like each other and some people hate each other, but they still play together. Aynsley Dunbar currently tours with Eric Burdon and The New Animals. Once you've made your name, you can go into a band, say the Jefferson Starship, and people will say, "There's Aynsley Dunbar. And so we kept waiting around to see if he was gonna go take care of it. Was that the last time you saw them? Its been your band longer than it was ever Steves band. And when it parks back out in the audience, at the end of the song, I walk offstage. And I didnt want to stop either, by the way. 'That's okay with me. He was great at the beginning- very wide awake and eager to play. And I started learning how to craft song songs, instead of just jams. Okay. So were listening and goin, Wow, this guys got an amazing voice, but does he fit with us? Because it was a radical change. It was really great. According to Albritton, Hendrix was the most fun to cast, and Aynsley Dunbar, the Journey drummer and veteran of Mothers of Invention and the Bluesbreakers, was the most difficult. We were destroyed by thathe was a wonderful singer, a wonderful bass player, and a great guy, and he was part of a real interesting chemistry that Columbia wanted to sign. Neal did a solo album way before I was thinking about it, with Jan Hammer. The more accurately you play something and make it more defined, the better it can be used as music. They couldn't see any further than where they were at. I had no desire to. Permission was received January, 2001. We amalgamate our ideas and that usually gets Craig going. AD: Oh yes. Everyone thought I would move back to L.A. , but the Starship required a drummer at that time so I joined them. For instance, a recording studio is one of the best places to teach somebody what they should be doing and what they shouldn't. And we did that for about five years, that grueling schedule. To the average person, they just don t like drum solos. I just thought it was part of the aging process. AD: R&B was happening, and traditional jazz. "It's just me and [drummer] Aynsley Dunbar, pretty much, with this big, wide-open space for phrasing on the guitar. I really try to stay away from it. It was getting annoying. Now I feel like I have 100 percent of myself here, and Im more into it than Ive ever been into it. Which in those days was not good. Aynsley Dunbar had played with everybody. It. Well, Steve came out with us and started hangin outhe was hangin with me, actually, and we were roomin together, and I pulled out an acoustic guitar, and one of the first songs we wrote, in about a half an hour, was Patiently. And that just kinda came out of nowhere. So Don Ellis took the liberty, about two weeks after that, of sending our tapes to Herbie Herbert, who at the time was managing Journey. **, Well, noI didnt realize anything. No rehearsal-just get on the stage and play. I would suggest that anybody who feels tired and worn out on stage, check out the nearest Nautilus center and go into a program. That was pretty interesting and he was a great help. We just try not to talk about him. There was a lot of stuff that we didnt agree on. So I thought about It, you know, and I went back home. I was completely overawed by Peter Green's playing, but I didn't think the band was backing him properly. But in those days, if we took a month off from the road, I would jump into a side project. RM: I noticed you and Craig looking at each other a lot. If you want to make a song a hit record, it's got to be clean, crisp, and to the point. So Columbia was pushing Journey to write more commercial music? So fine-I couldn't have asked for a better opportunity. In the beginning, it felt extremely freeing. But I appreciated the musicality, the ability to jam. I called Jonathan. Then I got a call from Bob Ezrin, the producer, and he asked me if I would do an album with Lou Reed. I wanna get out, I wanna stop. And I think Jon said, Well, just take some time off, and well think, and I said Okay, fine. And I just sort of fell back into my life. We mastered the record. He could have picked Tony Bennettthe greatest voice! I been uplifted when he called, but when heard "country/western" I went back down. Bye," I left London and went to San Francisco to check out Journey, because they had been calling me up ever since l had been with Bowie. Do you think they wished they didnt need a charismatic singer out front to succeed they way they did? Did you feel like you were the new guy, still, after all that? But if you're backing up a soloist, the fill you played on the record might not get behind what he's doing on stage at that particular moment, because he's doing something different. And then, there's Cynthia Albritton, known now as Cynthia Plaster Caster, who collects a somewhat different kind of keepsake: plaster molds of famous rock and roll penises. I was against that. Giving me high fives. I always had the idea in mind that you never go to a big town unless you go with a band. It's one of those political things, part of the business, and I really shouldn't complain because I've been on a lot of records that have been hits. You work on something for so many years, and you attain what you attain, which was an amazing feat, and then its sort of like the rug is pulled out from under you. I didnt need any of the other affirmations. AD: On. Did you feel like Journey had run its course? Theres definitely some decisions, that are pretty personal, that I wouldnt have done the way I did, because I was not thinking clearly. Fuck Steveyknow. They'd get a gig somewhere else paying a couple of pounds more, so they would send a substitute to play with me. I dont know. And he played the tape for em, and they werent sure. I just want to stop for a while. So February 1st was when I finally got home from the last shows, in Alaska. Rebel. Are you not allowed to talk about him on the record? I drank a lot. I had that group The Aynsley Dunbar Retaliation] for about three years, and we built a following around the country. So the first gig I did with him, I was just learning the songs. . I still never wanted Journey to go away, because it was something that I was there from the beginning and started. Of course we were friends. When I'm playing rock and roll with the Starship, if I sat there filling in all over the place, it would sound messy. That doesnt feel too great to me. AD: No, I haven't. But when you had that conversation, did you get the sense that they thought you were just going out on your own? We did get a little bit trendy in spots, we all occasionally got a bit funny with our dressing, but we did not follow the New Wave thing, or the punk thing. I just love it. Yknow? And that is sort of a drag. Because it reminds me of so much. AD: No, but Ludwig wants me to start doing clinics. For a while, I was doing too many studio gigs, and I couldn't wait to get on the road. Then I did the A Hard Road album with him, and that helped me understand the songs a little better. And so I was always livin on that edge. Im _not _whining. They wanted to make it without one. But I personally thought it was dumb. _[laughs] _Having people love you every night is a beautiful way to run away from things.
